INRIX Traffic Layer
The INRIX Traffic layer overlays Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) data on the map as color-coded road segments. Unlike the real-time traffic overlay available in Map Settings, this layer shows long-term traffic volume patterns sourced from INRIX — useful for understanding how much traffic a road typically carries throughout the year.
Enabling the Layer
You can toggle the INRIX Traffic layer in two places:
- Toolbar button — Click the car icon (🚗) in the map toolbar. The button highlights when the layer is active.
- Layers panel — Open the Layers tab in the left panel, then click the eye icon next to INRIX Traffic.
When the layer is enabled, colored segments appear on the road network across your project area.
AADT Color Legend
Each segment is colored by its AADT value — the estimated number of vehicles traveling that road each day. The color scale ranges from white (very low volume) through pink and magenta to bright purple (very high volume).
| Color | AADT Range | Density |
|---|---|---|
| White | 0 – 5,000 | Very Low |
| Light pink | 5,000 – 10,000 | Low |
| Medium pink | 10,000 – 25,000 | Moderate |
| Bright magenta | 25,000 – 50,000 | High |
| Bright purple | 50,000 + | Very High |
The full color legend is displayed in the Layers panel under the INRIX Traffic section.
Viewing Segment Details
Click any colored road segment on the map to open a Traffic Details tab in the left panel. Each segment gets its own closeable tab, and multiple segments can be open at the same time.
TIP
Pinned (open-tab) segments are highlighted in teal on the map, making it easy to track which segments you have open.
Detail Panel Contents
| Section | Description |
|---|---|
| Road name and bearing | The name of the road and the direction of travel (e.g., NB, SB, EB, WB) |
| AADT count | Total vehicles per day, color-coded by density tier |
| Density label | A plain-language description: Very Low through Very High |
| Peak Period | The time period (morning, afternoon, etc.) with the highest average traffic |
| Peak Hour | The specific hour of day with the highest average volume |
| Busiest Day | The day of week with the highest total traffic |
| Hourly heatmap | A grid showing typical traffic volume for every hour of every day of the week |
Reading the Hourly Heatmap
The heatmap grid shows 7 columns (Monday through Sunday) and 24 rows (midnight through 11 PM). Darker cells indicate higher traffic volume for that day-and-hour combination. The peak cell is marked for quick reference.
A Daily Avg column on the right groups rows into time periods (Early Morning, Morning, Mid-day, Afternoon, Evening, Late) and shows the average daily traffic volume for each period across all seven days of the week.
Hover over any cell to see the exact day, time, and vehicle count.
Closing Traffic Tabs
To close a segment's detail tab, click the × button on the tab itself. Closing the tab also removes the teal pinned highlight for that segment on the map.
Hover Tooltip
When the INRIX Traffic layer is enabled, hovering over any segment shows a tooltip with:
- Road name
- Bearing direction
- AADT count
- Density label
Data Source
Traffic volume data is provided by INRIX via their AADT segments product. This is historical annual average data, not real-time conditions. For current traffic conditions, use the Real-time Traffic toggle in Map Settings.
